French Knickers are a style of designer lingerie. The phrase, French knickers,  is  used mainly in the United Kingdom to denote a style of panties worn from the hip and having a look of a pair of shorts.

They often have a loose fitting open leg style which is not elasticated at the leg and has a comfortable fit. The French knicker is different from briefs, hipsters and bikini bottoms which tend to have a closer fit and elasticated leg. The term French knickers may have come from the fact that they look similar to the underwear worn by Can-Can dancers in Paris. However, in France the term is not used for this style of panties.

French knickers were very popular by the fifties in Britain and had become a firm favourite among women.  By the seventies sexy styles of French Knickers, designed by superb brands such as Janet Reger among others, gave an erotic elegance to designer lingerie.  During the nineties, French knickers began to have more competition from styles such as tangas, briefs, thongs and boy shorts which had begun to be favoured by the youger woman.
